Innovative Disinfectant Solution Strengthens Hygiene and Cuts Waste in UN Missions

ES-KO has developed an innovative project for the local production of sodium hypochlorite (NaClO), a key disinfectant essential for maintaining high hygiene and sanitation standards in challenging environments.

The outcome is twofold: better health protection, less waste.

At the UN camp in South Sudan, the NaClO production system enables the daily cleaning of facilities used by more than 15,000 peacekeepers, directly contributing to health protection and mission continuity. Having a constant, on-site, and autonomous source of disinfectant allows for rapid and efficient responses to health needs, while minimizing the risks associated with contamination, supply chain disruptions, and harsh environmental conditions.

Beyond the health benefits, the project delivers a measurable environmental impact. Local production has replaced imported bleach, eliminating regular transport and significantly reducing the use of single-use plastic containers, thereby lowering the overall ecological footprint of operations.

The NaClO project reflects ES-KO’s commitment to integrating sustainable solutions into everyday logistics operations, with a focus on efficiency, safety, and environmental responsibility. The company aims to extend this initiative to other African countries, amplifying its positive health and environmental impacts on a larger scale.
