ES-KO marks one year of successfully implementing biodegradable materials across its operations in Somalia, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability.
It has been a year since ES-KO introduced a complete range of biodegradable materials across its operations in Somalia, including food containers, disposable tableware, and canteen accessories. This was a deliberate choice, motivated by the commitment to support the environmental goals of the United Nations, and it was met with sincere appreciation by UNSOS.
As is often the case with new products, there were initial doubts. Some teams in the field were concerned that the materials might not withstand everyday use, particularly with hot or liquid foods. However, after practical testing, the biodegradable solutions proved to be durable and fully suitable for daily use.
Today, these products have become a normal part of daily operations across all ES-KO sites in Somalia. The PX has also embraced sustainable alternatives, such as paper shopping bags, helping foster a more environmentally conscious culture.
One year on, the results are positive: the transition has been well received, the solutions have proven effective, and the initiative is now fully integrated into ES-KO’s work in Somalia. The next step will be to further improve waste management and sorting, ensuring even more efficient use of the eco-friendly materials introduced—an area where ES-KO remains committed and forward-looking.
