Embracing innovative initiatives in designing sustainable solutions is a key area in ES-KO’s solid waste management goals. In our quest for a better environment and fostering a sustainable carbon emissions footprint by reducing CO2 emissions, sustainability is no longer just a trend, but a crucial value that ES-KO has embedded into our practices and operations. In our operations in UNMISS, ES-KO has initiated a number of programs prioritizing on the 3Rs of waste management (reduction, reuse and recycling).

ES-KO values the notion of a circular economy and in the context of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals Agenda 2030, ES-KO is focused on greening initiatives and proper management of waste materials by considering our waste streams. By introducing more streams, we are able to divert more waste from landfills. Our common streams are organic matter, wastepaper/ card boxes, waste PET plastic bottles, glass and metal/cans products. Organic waste accounts for 70-80% of our waste. Our goals extend further to processing and disposal in a way that best addresses the assurance of public health and environmental concerns.

As we strive towards zero waste, we aim at diverting 90% of our waste from landfills. This signals to our team and stakeholders our seriousness in achieving our sustainability goals. In support of our waste management initiatives in our operations in UNMISS, ES-KO has partnered with EcoClean waste Management company. Ecoclean is registered and owned by a South Sudanese whose vision is to contribute to a clean and healthy environment using an integrated approach to waste management. Fourteen days into the new year, we have achieved milestones in waste management and value addition. 11,088 PET plastic bottles for recycling, 500Kg of waste wood for re-use by local carpenters, 300Kg of carton boxes for recycling and 1T of organic waste for composting.
